Trinidad and Tobago’s swimming sensation, Johann-Matthew Matamoro, paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Phillip Watts, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, to share his athletic journey, Olympic ambitions, and the support needed to keep making waves on the international stage.

A Rising National Talent

Currently a student-athlete at the University of Indianapolis, Matamoro has shown remarkable balance between academics and athletics. He has secured a spot on the Dean’s Honor Roll with a GPA above 3.4, while proudly representing Trinidad and Tobago at major international competitions.

His impressive medal record includes:

  • Paraguay: Bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay (national record), 13th in 100m backstroke
  • Mexico: Silver in the 50m backstroke, 4x100m & 4x200m freestyle relays (national records), 4th in 100m backstroke
  • Bahamas: Gold in the 100m backstroke, Silver in the 50m backstroke
  • El Salvador: Bronze in the 100m backstroke, 4th in 50m backstroke
  • CARIFTA & CCCAN Games: Multiple medal wins

Eyeing Olympic History

During the meeting, Matamoro outlined his vision to form Trinidad and Tobago’s first-ever Olympic relay swimming team, with a focus on upcoming events such as the Commonwealth Games and the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games. He emphasized the importance of consistent support for elite athletes, particularly in areas such as international tuition assistance and access to world-class swim equipment.

Government Commitment to Athletes

Minister Watts praised Matamoro’s discipline, determination, and dedication, reaffirming that the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs will continue to back elite athletes through programmes like the Elite Athlete Assistance Programme. He also extended appreciation to Matamoro’s parents for their unwavering support in nurturing his talent.
