In the heart of our community, a group of vibrant women gathers twice a week at the Eddie Hart Savannah, moving to the rhythm of life, laughter, and light exercise. They call themselves the Ladies of Class, a fitness group that has become a cornerstone of camaraderie, health, and joy for its members. We met Alexis Hartman, the group’s dedicated instructor, and some of the ladies who make this class unique.

A Legacy of Movement

Alexis Hartman has been leading the Ladies of Class for over a decade. “This class came together to create something meaningful,” he shared. Originally part of the 5 O’Clock Crew, Alexis took over when the group dissolved. “We’ve been going strong ever since,” he said, noting the class began in 2009, the same year Michael Jackson passed away.

The group caters to mature adults, many in their 60s and 70s, focusing on low-impact exercises tailored to their needs. “I don’t give them no soldier boy workout,” Alexis laughed. “We focus on movements they can handle, especially since many deal with aches and pains. But they come out, sweat a little, and have fun. That’s what it’s all about.”

More Than Just Exercise

For the women of Ladies of Class, the group is more than fitness—it’s a family. Deborah Francois, known as Debbie, has been with the group for nearly 15 years. One of the ladies said, “Since my husband passed away, this class has been my stress relief,” another shared. “I have to be here every session. It’s my sanctuary.”

Christine Arthur, another long-time member, described the group as an “extended family.” “We don’t just exercise; we look out for each other,” she said. “We celebrate holidays, support one another, and enjoy life together. It’s a beautiful thing.”

Join the Fun

The Ladies of Class meets every Monday and Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Savannah. It’s $30 for a drop-in class and $160 for the month. “It’s a very reasonable rate for what you get,” Debbie said. “You get fitness, friendship, and a whole lot of fun.”

Looking Ahead

At 63, Alexis is reflective about the future. “I’m not a spring chicken anymore,” he chuckled. “But I hope we can continue for as long as possible. Seeing the ladies enjoy themselves and hearing their compliments—that’s what keeps me going.”

The Ladies of Class is a testament to the power of community, proving that age is just a number and fitness can be both fun and fulfilling. Whether you’re looking to stay active, make new friends, or simply enjoy good music and good vibes, this group welcomes you with open arms.
